Default Gaming laptop or engagement ring?

So I finally got a decent paying job, but I spend my day demoing sexah laptops, all day, every day I work. I have what is now known to be the world's greatest girl, after we got back together after she got through some rough home stuff, and we both know we have found the one and want to get married. Problem comes up that I as Circuit City employee may buy the uber HP 64 gaming notebook for under a grand too. Any purchase would be straight cash, saved up for, no credit. Yeah, I do that for everything. I'm gonna spend roughly the same amount on either one, and believe it or not, she would support me getting the laptop, as she is a complete and total geek just like me. She asked for a wireless router once, but said only if I flashed the firmware to a hacked image. She's perfect.

So should I get the laptop, which she knows I want, or should I completely surprise her and put a ring on her finger?

The ring man. The laptop doesn't do nearly as much for you...

Well, depending on how much you have to work with, you could get the laptop and sneak in a "holder ring" until you can get the actual one....or spring for a good ring. Let her open the laptop when you bring it home, all wrapped up with a bow and have the ring covertly placed inside the package underneath the laptop.... so she is like "Woot! Ultimate mobile gaming!" Then "What's this?" /smooches XOXOX

Laptop. If you have to ask that question, you're not ready.

You are an idiot. That was my vote. As a girl, I can tell you that I *might* support new electronics, but absolutely nothing speaks volumes quite like diamonds.

Sure she'll support the laptop, but does she know about the decision you're trying to make? I seriously hope she never finds out, for your sake, otherwise the decision might be made for you.

I hear Cracker Jack has a nice, yet affordable selection of rings...thus allowing you to get your laptop AND the ring.

Just depends on the gal and how well you really think you know her.
I'd personally clobber my husband if he bought me a $1k ring - something that has no purpose other than sitting around waiting for me to lose it down a drain or something. We still haven't bought any 'engagement ring' for me, just simple wedding bands, and we've been together for almost 20 years.

I'd much rather have him get a laptop that I could, over time, eventually 'steal' away from him.... *wink

But I'm not very typical in that regard re: jewelry + love.

So unless you're ABSOLUTELY SURE your gal has an attitude like mine (some say they do, but they don't, not really, they're being polite & hoping you'll know they're only being polite, heh), I'd get the ring.

Laptop

Marriage is a dying relict of our passing way of live. More and more couples choose to live together without marriage. Besides that, a laptop never wants divorce and you dont have the risk of getting sued till you bleed .
I could add more positive aspects why a gaming laptop is better then a women, but i'm not a sexist and female and male are equal, afterall we are all human.

I guess the faster you make $1000, the less tense of a decision this is.

If you really want to marry her, and the two of you are ready, go ahead and buy the ring. Get married. Have fun. The laptop will still be there.

What amazes me is that some people actually voted for you to get the laptop.

Get the girl first, dude. She's far more important that some computer.

You took the words right out of my mouth! I'm not big on jewelry, especially overpriced baubles. Honestly, though, the safe choice is the ring. There will be other laptops, but there's only one "perfect" girl for you.

Marriage can last a whole life time.

The laptop only lasts a few years.

I'm getting this advice from someone who has been married before. Marriage CAN last a whole life time, with emphasis on the 'can'. As I said before, if you REALLY have to ask this question and hesitate to answer, then you are not ready for marriage. She may be the girl of your dreams or whatever, but that question right there shows you should just go and get the laptop.

This isn't based on whether I like computers or not, or whether I'm a romantic or not. I'm being purely realistic. If you love her, good for you two. Just because you don't get her an engagement ring NOW does not mean your relationship will fall apart. In fact, if that WERE the case, then I seriously doubt the marriage would last long anyway. Relationships may be all about sacrifices, but you personally have to be ready, so does she.

Talk about it with her first though, before you pop the question. If you're not ready, then it really isn't going to do your relationship justice if you just jump in the deep end without testing out the water. If she is ready, truely ready, then she should understand if you're not and be patient. This goes the other way too. If you pop the question and she declines because she's not ready, then you should be willing to wait aswell.

I agree 100%. If you are seriously debating between a laptop and a ring for a future fiancé, you're definitely not ready for the commitment. I did place my vote on the ring anyways.
